2 years agoLooking at the practice speeds from Friday's session at Phoenix Raceway, it was a lot of the same heavy hitters up top, but one name stuck out as a bit of a surprise, and that was Ricky Stenhouse Jr., who was seventh-fastest in the session. His No. 47 Chevrolet also showed decent speed on runs over the long run, ranking fifth-fastest in 15-lap average and sixth-fastest in 20-lap average. It's going to take more than a strong practice session for Stenhouse to have a good finish in Sunday's United Rentals 500(k) race, though. He hasn't finished inside the top 10 at Phoenix since the 2017 season, and five of his last six attempts at this track have ended with finishes of 22nd or worse. With that being said, there's optimism in the Stenhouse camp. "We're optimistic about the race this weekend after being one of a handful of teams that tested [at Phoenix] in January," Stenhouse Jr. said. "We've learned some things."--Jordan McAbee
