Aaron Nola 2023 Player Outlook: A Safe Investment to Anchor Your Staff
2 years agoWe received a slight discount on Nola in 2022 after he posted an uninspiring ERA in 2021. Fantasy managers who took advantage of that were rewarded in 2022, as Nola turned in a fantastic season on the hill, posting a 3.25 ERA with a 0.96 WHIP and a sparkling 29.1%-3.6% K%-BB%. The most important stat you can point to with starting pitchers is the strikeout-to-walk ratio, and few pitchers do it better than Nola in that regard. He once again threw four pitches above 10% of the time, and they are all effective pitches in their own right. The knock on Nola is that his strike-throwing ways can turn into a higher-than-desired home run rate, but his ability to get deep into games and rack up quality starts and wins takes away a lot of the sting of that, and the WHIP will always be great with how few batters he walks. Another very appealing thing about Nola is that he's delivered four straight 30+ start seasons (not counting 2020). He is a picture of health and consistency, and can be drafted confidently as your fantasy team's ace in 2023.
