Ezequiel Tovar Making MLB Debut Against Padres
2 years agoColorado Rockies shortstop Ezequiel Tovar is making his major-league debut on Friday against the San Diego Padres and left-hander Sean Manaea, starting at shortstop and hitting eighth in the batting order. Tovar, the team's No. 2 prospect per MLB Pipeline, was called up from Triple-A Albuquerque this week after playing just five games for them. The 21-year-old has been heralded as the Rockies' shortstop of the future, so it's likely that he'll see regular playing time in the final weeks of the regular season. In 66 games for Double-A Hartford this year, Tovar hit .318/.386/.546 with a .932 OPS, 13 home runs, 47 RBI, 39 runs scored and 17 stolen bases. As of right now, he's a defense-first prospect, but the young right-handed hitter has shown an improved ability to drive the ball this year despite an aggressive approach at the plate.
