Zdeno Chara Hangs Up His Skates
2 years agoLong-time Boston Bruins defenseman Zdeno Chara has announced his retirement from the NHL. He's decided to call it a day after 24 seasons in the league, 14 of which he spent in Boston. The six-time All-Star was a member of the New York Islanders last season and played for Washington in 2020-21 before signing a symbolic one-day contract with the Bruins to retire as a member of the team. He was voted the league's best defenseman in 2009 and Chara captained Boston to the 2011 Stanley Cup win and two more finals. The 45-year-old retires as the league's all-time leader in games played by a defenseman, having taken the ice in 1,680 regular-season games. Standing at six-foot-nine, Chara, who had 680 regular-season points in his career, also goes down in history as the NHL's tallest ever player.
