The San Diego Padres recalled infielder C.J. Abrams from Triple-A El Paso on Monday. Abrams is starting at shortstop and hitting eighth against the Arizona Diamondbacks for Monday's game at Petco Park. The team was expected to recall the rookie prospect after Manny Machado's (ankle) injury on Sunday and they did just that to provide infield depth while they determine the best course of action for Machado moving forward. At least on Monday, the Padres shifted normal shortstop Ha-Seong Kim to third base to cover for Machado while Abrams will handle shortstop. Abrams hit .182 with one homer, nine runs, four RBI, and a steal across 55 at-bats in a tour of duty with the Padres earlier in 2022. The Padres optioned reliever Reiss Knehr back to Triple-A in a corresponding move to make room for Abrams on the roster.
