On Day 1 of NFL free agency, the Cincinnati Bengals made a change at the top of their running back depth chart. After seven seasons, they agreed to trade Joe Mixon to the Houston Texans and signed Zack Moss to a two-year, $8 million contract.
There had been rumors the Bengals would be moving on from Mixon, and Cincinnati finally pulled the trigger. On the surface, it’s a good landing spot for Moss as he is poised to lead this backfield going into the 2024 season.

Zack Moss to the Bengals: Fantasy Football Impact
Moss enjoyed a career year in 2023. Filling in for starter Jonathan Taylor, Moss ran for a career-high 794 yards and scored a career-best seven total touchdowns.

He was highly effective when he did get the ball. Moss finished seventh in Rush Yards Over Expectation (RYOE), per NFL Next Gen Stats. This was better than Taylor, who finished 17th in the same metric. Among RBs with at least 100 carries, Moss finished 15th in Missed Tackles Forced Per Attempt (MTF/ATT), per Fantasy Points Data Suite. This was also better than Taylor.
Moss proved he is more than capable of leading a team's backfield. The Bengals felt so as well and awarded him with a contract in free agency.
There have been reports the Bengals want to give fellow RB Chase Brown more work in 2024. This would cap Moss’ upside and could lead to more of a 60/40 split in favor of Moss. We must also remember that Moss has had injury issues dating back to his days at the University of Utah. So while we should be excited about Moss’ potential with the Bengals, we shouldn’t get too carried away.
Moss is more of an RB2 for fantasy football purposes with the potential to give you a little extra in any given week. He will likely end up being a mid-round pick in fantasy drafts come August.
