Analysis: It is clear that Zach Ertz' slow start was the result of a painful mid-core injury that required a July surgery. Impatient owners frustrated with Ertz' pedestrian production through the first three or four weeks likely clicked the "minus" button in their add/drop screen prematurely. Those who waited now have a mid-range TE1 whose targets continue to increase as he gets more comfortable with quarterback Sam Bradford.
Ertz claims to be 100% healthy, and it has shown in his production. It is true that Eagles' head coach Chip Kelly has a soft spot for Brent Celek and his blocking abilities, which has cut into playing time for Ertz at times over the last two and a half seasons. It is also true that Ertz focused on his blocking all offseason in a bid to stay on the field. Whatever the case, Ertz has earned 7-8 targets in each of Philadelphia's last three games, catching 14 passes for 166 yards over that span.
While Ertz has received considerable hype the past two summers, his ceiling remains even higher than those numbers indicate. His route-running is top-notch and his speed more than adequate for the tight end positiong. Do not be afraid to add Ertz if your current TE is underwhelming, and don't be surprised if he puts up top-10 TE numbers from Week 9-forward.
