Analysis: Zach Davies was sent to the Milwaukee Brewers by the Baltimore Orioles in exchange for Gerardo Parra when the Orioles tried to make a post-season run in 2015. Since the 2015 trade deadline, Davies has made the Brewers very happy that they decided to start selling off their established pieces. Last year he made six starts and pitched 34 innings in the MLB and produced a solid ERA, WHIP, and FIP of 3.71, 1.21, and 3.81. He also allowed an impressively low HR/9 of 0.5 for Miller Park, but he lacked control of the strike zone and the ability to make batters miss with a BB/9 and K/9 of 4.0 and 6.4. This season, the youthful 23-year-old Davies has made 12 starts and pitched 69.2 innings for Milwaukee and has clearly grown by being thrown into learning situations early. He has a once again solid ERA, WHIP, and FIP of 3.62, 1.15, and 4.19. He has been more plagued by the HR-friendly conditions of Miller Park as he is allowing 1.2 HR/9, however, he has made significant improvements in pitch command with a 2.6 BB/9 and is striking out more batters at 7.2 K/9.
The Brewers are rebuilding, and Davies is part of their future at just 23 years old. However, don't overlook the present, where Davies is establishing himself as a fast learner.
