Yesterday's Studs and Duds: Fantasy Baseball Recap from 6/8/16

By Keith Allison from Hanover, MD, USA (Taijuan Walker) [CC BY-SA 2.0 (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.0)], via Wikimedia Commons

Every day, we will be taking a quick look at the best and worst fantasy baseball performers from yesterday's games. Every team was in action last night, so there's plenty to discuss.

Here's a quick look at those who impressed on Wednesday, and those who want to pretend the day never happened.

Editor’s Note: To read about even more waiver wire options, be sure to check out our famous waiver wire pickups list which is a running list that is updated daily. Prefer using your phone? Our free waiver wire app is available for download in the Apple Store.

Fantasy Baseball Studs

Kris Bryant (3B/OF, CHC): Bryant jacked a two-run homer, scored twice, and stole a base as the Cubs pulled off a shocking upset of the Phillies.

Ben Zobrist (2B/OF, CHC): Zobrist homered in the same inning as Bryant and scored two runs. He snapped an 0-for-16 skid.

Javier Baez (2B/3B/SS, CHC): Baez came away with a hit on all four of his trips to the plate, driving in three runs in the process.

John Lackey (SP, CHC): Lackey didn’t really need much help from the aforementioned teammates, as he tossed seven shutout innings. He struck out eight and gave up only three singles.

Corey Dickerson (OF, TBR): Dickerson went 3-for-4 with a pair of solo shots to help the Rays beat the Diamondbacks

Josh Donaldson (3B, TOR): Donaldson fell a double short of the cycle, driving in three runs and scoring three himself as the Jays avoided a sweep at the hands of the Tigers.

Nick Castellanos (3B, DET): It was a good day for third basemen in Detroit. Castellanos also went deep, knocking in the Tigers’ only two runs of the game. He added a single and a walk.

Julio Teheran (SP, ATL): Teheran nearly beat the Padres by himself. He tossed eight innings of two-run ball, striking out eight, and had two hits and an RBI at the plate.

Wil Myers (1B/OF, SDP): The only runs Teheran allowed came off the bat of Myers, who took him deep twice.

Chris Tillman (SP, BAL): Tillman struck out nine in 7 1/3 shutout innings, moving to 8-1 on the season.

Mike Trout (OF, LAA): Trout fell a triple shy of the cycle, scoring and driving in a pair of runs each in a loss to the Yankees

The Yankees’ Outfield: …Driven in large part by the performance of their own outfield. Jacoby Ellsbury, Brett Gardner, and Carlos Beltran combined for eight hits in 12 at-bats, with six RBI and eight runs scored. Ellsbury and Beltran each hit home runs.

The Nationals’ Outfield: Ben Revere, Jayson Werth, and Bryce Harper each had three hits on the night. Werth homered and knocked in four runs…

Max Scherzer (SP, WAS): …Not that Scherzer needed the help. He shut out the White Sox for seven innings, striking out six and allowing just five runners to reach base.

Michael Conforto (OF, NYM): Conforto hit a game-tying homer and drove in three runs to help the Mets beat the Pirates in extra innings.

Gregory Polanco (OF, PIT): Polanco had three doubles, scored a run, knocked in a run, and stole a base. The technical term for this is “being good at baseball.”

Matt Adams (1B, STL): Adams had his third straight multi-hit game, opening the scoring for the Cardinals with a three-run bomb.

Brandon Moss (1B/OF, STL): Moss has taken a backseat to Adams at first base lately, but got the start in left field last night. He homered twice and drove in three runs.

Jhonny Peralta (SS, STL): Peralta hit a three-run homer and is 4-for-9 with three extra base hits in his first two games back from injury.

Zack Cozart (SS, CIN): Cozart went 2-for-5 with a homer and two RBI in a losing effort.

George Springer (OF, HOU): Springer ended an 0-for-12 skid with a leadoff homer and also scored two runs.

Jose Altuve (2B, HOU): Altuve was 2-for-3 with a walk, driving in two runs and stealing his 18th base of the season.

Chase Anderson (SP, MIL): Anderson allowed just two singles in 6 2/3 innings as the Brewers beat the Athletics. After a rough patch in late April, he has posted a 2.43 ERA in his last six starts.

Jonathan Villar (3B/SS, MIL): Villar went 2-for-3 with a walk and stole his league-leading 22nd base

Joe Mauer (1B, MIN): Mauer homered and scored three runs to help the Twins win for just the 18th time this season. Yikes.

Trevor Plouffe (3B, MIN): Plouffe was 2-for-4 with a homer of his own, scoring twice and driving in three.

Ketel Marte (SS, SEA): Marte had two hits and two stolen bases as the Mariners took down the Indians.

Chris Iannetta (C, SEA): Iannetta went 3-for-3 with two homers and four RBI. Pretty great day for the bottom of the M’s order…

Taijuan Walker (SP, SEA): …But Walker didn’t really need it. He struck out 11 batters in eight innings, allowing only three singles. Given his recent struggles, this outing was quite encouraging.

Mookie Betts (OF, BOS): Betts turned both of his singles into doubles by stealing two bags, but the Red Sox could only muster one run …

David Price (SP, BOS): …making Price the hard-luck loser despite going the distance and allowing only three hits. Unfortunately, two of them were homers.

Fantasy Baseball Duds

Dexter Fowler (OF, CHC): Fowler went 0-for-5 and left five runners on base. He was the only Cubs regular not to get a hit yesterday.

Maikel Franco (3B, PHI): Franco struck out twice and stranded the only Phillies runner to reach scoring position. He’s hitting just .247/.294/.428 on the year.

Jake Lamb (3B, ARI): Lamb struck out three times in his four at-bats and left four runners on base.

Archie Bradley (SP, ARI): Bradley couldn’t make it out of the sixth inning, allowing four runs on five hitds and four walks. He threw just 48 of his 87 pitches for strikes.

Jordan Zimmerman (SP, DET): Zimmerman failed to finish the fifth inning, allowing 10 baserunners, seven of whom came around to score. He has a 5.68 ERA since the end of April.

Lorenzo Cain (OF, KCR): Cain was the only Royals regular not to get a hit, as he struck out twice in four at-bats.

Mark Trumbo (1B/OF, BAL): Trumbo has been outstanding this season, but not last night. He struck out in all four trips to the plate…

Carlos Gonzalez (OF, COL): …as did CarGo, who has now whiffed in eight of his last nine at-bats.

James Shields (SP, CHW): Shields’ first start for his new team couldn’t have gone much worse. He allowed seven runs in only two innings of work and was booed off the mound. Welcome to Chicago, pal!

Jaime Garcia (SP, STL): Garcia gave up 13(!) hits and didn’t make it out of the fifth inning. He was fortunate to only allow five runs, and even more fortunate that the Reds are awful and his team still won.

Carlos Correa (SS, HOU): Correa was hitless in four at-bats, striking out twice. He’s 0-for-11 with four strikeouts in his last three games.

Eduardo Nunez (3B/SS, MIN): Nunez went 0-for-5 and stranded three runners. He was the only Twins regular to not reach base at least twice.

Every NFC Team's Most Undervalued Dynasty Fantasy Football Players to Target in 2025

Dynasty fantasy football is an ever-growing game. Only hardcore players partook in dynasty leagues years ago. However, it has become more common for casual players, too. Top Rookie Quarterback Sleepers to Target in 2025 Dynasty Fantasy Football Leagues

The quarterback position is notoriously difficult to evaluate. A big reason for this is that it's the position that requires the most information processing, awareness of what's happening on the field both before and after the snap, and the ability to react to many different types of situations. As such, it's incredibly difficult to find […]

Biggest Fantasy Football Tight End Surprises: 2nd-Year TE Breakout Stars & Sleepers for 2025 Drafts

Usually, you know what you're getting at tight end. Travis Kelce and Mark Andrews finish top three at the position in fantasy football. Young guys struggle to get going. Top Running Back Breakout Candidates for 2025 Fantasy Football Drafts: RB1 Projections & Outlooks

There's plenty of change in the 12 players that finish the season as "RB1s" every season.
