Yesterday's Studs and Duds: Fantasy Baseball Recap from 6/12/16

chicogo cubs

Tom Bellucco takes a look around MLB, and analyzes yesterday's fantasy baseball studs and duds for 6/12/16. These players can be sleepers and busts for fantasy baseball owners.

Every MLB got their game in on Sunday, and the results were awesome as always. We had some excellent pitching displays countered with some powerful hitting performances. ESPN even broadcasted two games from the right field bleachers, which would be awesome if they had some talented commentators. Let's recap.

Here's some players who played like a stud on Sunday and some players who simply did not.

Fantasy Baseball Studs

The Orioles and Blue Jays Slugfest: This game turned out as most would've predicted, with a score of 10-9 in favor of Toronto. Baltimore did most of their damage with the long ball, as Pedro Alvarez, Adam Jones (x2), Matt Wieters, and Chris Davis all went deep. Meanwhile, Toronto mixed in some doubles with their dingers. Almost everyone hit a two-bagger, and five players finished with multiple hits. Here's the full damage report.

Matt Moore (SP, TB): Moore rewarded his patient fantasy owners with a two-hit, 10-strikeout gem on Sunday. He walked just one batter in his seven scoreless innings. While Moore bounced back nicely from a string of rough starts, his opponent, Dallas Keuchel, fell apart again despite a solid first few innings.

Oakland Athletics Hitters: Every Oakland hitter who didn't bat from the ninth spot of the order recorded at least one hit on Sunday, including the pinch hitter Yonder Alonso. Oakland is not quite the cake walk of a lineup that we're used to, and they're being led by dangerous hitters like Jed Lowrie, Danny Valencia, Khris Davis, and Marcus Semien.

The Cubs: I hate to keep mentioning teams as a whole, but this is an exact example of why I feel I need to do so. Jason Heyward and Anthony Rizzo each recorded three hits. Javier Baez hit a home run. Jon Lester went seven innings without an earned run and struck out seven. It was an effort that makes you think the Cubs might not lose ever again.

Michael Fulmer (SP, DET): Fulmer's magical run continued on Sunday against the Yankees. He finished just six innings and struck out three batters with his 91 pitches, but he kept the Yanks scoreless while allowing just two hits and three walks.

Ian Kinsler (2B, DET): The veteran middle infielder just keeps hitting, as he hit his 13th homer of the year on Sunday. Kinsler finished with two RBI, two runs, and a walk.

Yordano Ventura (SP, KC): In the wake of his pending suspension, Ventura threw a gem on Sunday against a slumping White Sox team. The fire thrower hurled seven one-run innings, struck out 10 batters, and allowed five hits and a walk. The upside is there, but the mental and emotional stability is what makes Ventura volatile.

Francisco Lindor and Carlos Santana (CLE): Lindor collected three hits (including a home run), three RBI, and two runs. Santana had an equal number of RBI and runs, but his came from two home runs, one as a righty and one as a lefty.

Robbie Ray (SP, ARI): Ray's upside has been apparent since his exciting call up, and Sunday's start is the reason why. He threw 7.2 scoreless innings against the Marlins, allowing just three hits and a walk and striking out six. Shout out to powerful rookie Peter O'Brien for backing Ray with a three-run shot, his first of his MLB career.

A Pitcher's Duel in Coors?!: I don't know what to make of this one, but it certainly deserves mention. Tyler Anderson shined in his MLB debut, pitching 6.1 innings of one-run, six-hit ball. He struck out six. Meanwhile, Christian Friedrich threw six solid innings for the opposing Padres. He allowed one unearned run on two hits and three walks while striking out nine Rockies.

Matt Holliday and Yadier Molina (STL): The Cardinals' veterans had another great day on Sunday. Holliday hit yet another opposite field home run on his way to a three-hit game. Molina also collected three hits, spraying them to every corner of the park.

Fantasy Baseball Duds

Aaron Sanchez (SP, TOR): The Blue Jays gave Sanchez plenty of run support by scoring five runs in the first inning. However, holding down the Orioles was a tall task for the young pitcher. He survived five innings allowing six runs, 10 hits, and three walks while striking out seven. Sanchez still got a win, as Ubaldo Jiminez and company were much worse.

Marwin Gonzalez (SS, HOU): In for Carlos Correa, Gonzalez went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts from the second spot in the order. The Astros desperately need their star shortstop back when they continue play on Tuesday.

Yankees' 2, 3, and 4 Hitters: Brett Gardner, Carlos Beltran, and Starlin Castro combined to go 0-for-10 and left seven men on base Sunday. This has been an issue for New York all year, and they will be sellers soon if it continues.

Todd Frazier (3B, CWS): The power upside has certainly been there for the White Sox big offseason addition, but Frazier continues to struggle with making contact at times. He went 0-for-4 again on Sunday with three strikeouts, bringing his season average down to .211.

Tommy Joseph (1B, PHI): Joseph officially earned the starting first base position, dethroning Ryan Howard. However, an 0-for-4 day with two strikeouts is not quite what the management had in mind. Joseph should have a fairly long leash with this job, as Howard is not exactly knocking at the door, but he should probably avoid doing the exact thing that led to Howard's demotion.

Giancarlo Stanton (OF, MIA): Stanton went 0-for-3 with a strikeout and is now batting .192 on the season. Ouch.

The Padres' Coors Field Trip: In three games at Coors Field this weekend, the Padres hit just two home runs, and both came in Friday's contest. With hitters like Matt Kemp, Yangervis Solarte, and Wil Myers, you would think this team would be able to capitalize on the thin air. It's just not their year in San Diego.

Rougned Odor (2B, TEX): Odor is making quite the name for himself in terms of Justin Upton-like streaky hitting. The dangerous second baseman went 0-for-5 with four strikeouts on Sunday from the cleanup spot. Yikes.
