Yariel Rodriguez has notable upside in dynasty leagues but is not a fantasy baseball waiver wire add in redraft leagues with limited innings and likely a bullpen role in his future this season.
BALLER MOVE: Add only in dynasty leagues
ROSTERED IN: 22% of Leagues
ANALYSIS: The Toronto Blue Jays were thrilled to land Cuban right-hander Yariel Rodriguez to a five-year deal this offseason. They weren't the only club interested in his services after he showed immense potential while pitching in Japan's Nippon Professional Baseball.
The 27-year-old posted a tidy 1.48 ERA with 60 strikeouts in 56 relief outings with Chunichi in the 2022 season before returning home to Cuba. He didn't pitch professionally in the 2023 season, which interestingly puts a cap on his fantasy value in his first season in the big leagues.
The Jays will monitor Rodriguez's innings this season and it's been reported that he will likely move to a multi-inning relief role when Alec Manoah (shoulder) returns to the team's rotation. He's done well so far with a 2.35 ERA and a massive 40.6% K% in two starts but has pitched a total of only 7 2/3 innings in that time. It will be nearly impossible to extract wins out of the talented righty in 2024.

There is certainly upside in dynasty leagues but Rodriguez's value in 2024 is limited. He should be avoided in redraft leagues as a result.
