ANALYSIS: Any player, regardless of offensive prowess, who is eligible for more than two positions is still a valuable player to have on your team. Toronto Blue Jays' utility infielder Yangervis Solarte is just that kind of player. Solarte is good for the most part; he's got some pop, doesn't strike out too much, and stays healthy. His .258 BABIP in 2017 is very disconcerting, yet you can only assume that he's due for a bounce-back year after he produced career-lows in wOBA, wRC+, and WAR. He also suffered from a lot of infield pop-ups as well as an elevated K%. The Blue Jays are hopeful that a change of scenery will allow him to bounce back to a slightly above-average hitter.
The key here is that starting third baseman Josh Donaldson is having some arm issues, which opens the door for Solarte to get extended playing time. However, keep your expectations modest; Solarte can get hot just as easy as he can get cold. If you're needing some depth, he's a viable option. If you need a starter or a guy you can plug into various positions on the regular throughout the year, tread lightly. Solarte is more of a short-term fix that carries low risk but the potential for high reward.
