ANALYSIS: Texas outfielder Willie Calhoun is tired of being ignored. In the minors and in the majors, the Ranger rookie has done everything he was supposed to in 2019. He raked at the minors after failing to break camp with the Rangers, hitting eight home runs with a .973 OPS in his first 32 games. He raked at the majors, hitting five home runs in his first 99 plate appearances. And now that he's back in the majors after a surprising demotion on July 15, "Groundskeeper" Willie is doing what he does best. Raking, baby.
Since being recalled on July 26 to replace Joey Gallo and his broken hamate bone, Calhoun has hit four home runs over his first 48 plate appearances with a .400 ISO and a 157 wRC+. In the upcoming week, Calhoun is set up for some great matchups, first heading to the favorable conditions of Toronto for three games before coming home for a four-game set against the Minnesota Twins. Not only is the weather in Arlington forecast to be windy with temperatures in the high 90's, but scheduled to pitch in Sunday's matchup is former Ranger - and perennial home run bingo machine - Martin Perez. Forget about ducks on the pond, Calhoun has leaves on the yard. And they're about to get raked.
