Former New England Patriots and Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady retired during the 2022 offseason, then returned for a third year with the Bucs. He retired again this offseason, but naturally, there's speculation he could unretire once again and return for another NFL campaign.
Brady spoke on the topic recently, so we have the latest news regarding the 45-year-old future Hall-of-Famer.
How did Brady play in 2022 and will he return in 2023? Let's dive in.
Tom Brady 2022 Season Review
In 17 games, Brady completed 490 of his 733 passing attempts (both NFL records) for 4,694 yards, 25 touchdowns, and 19 interceptions. His 6.4 yards per attempt was his lowest clip since 2002 (third NFL season) and the Bucs went 8-9 with a struggling offensive line and offensive attack as a whole.
It was Brady's least efficient season of his career, but his raw stats and production were inarguably impressive for the oldest player in the league. The Buccaneers were blown out by the Dallas Cowboys in the NFC Wild Card round, and Brady called it a career shortly thereafter.
Will Brady Return For the 2023 NFL Season?
Brady told Sports Illustrated that he won't un-retire. "I'm certain I'm not playing again, so I've tried to make that clear and I hate to continue to profess that," said Brady. "I've already told people that lots of times." He later commented that being involved as an owner is a "dream come true." Many have speculated that the 45-year-old could be back under center in 2023-24 as a member of the Raiders, especially if he successfully purchases a piece of the franchise.
Talk about Brady's potential comeback picked up more steam after it was reported Jimmy Garoppolo (foot) hadn't passed a physical. That said, it sounds like the multi-time Super Bowl winner is done playing, although most won't believe it until he isn't on the field this season.
