Father Time stays undefeated. Once a first-round running back in fantasy football, Melvin Gordon III may now be fighting for his career in Baltimore. The Ravens brought in the 30-year-old in mid-July when J.K. Dobbins was sitting out of training camp. The presumptive starter has now returned to the field.
Now on his third team in two years, the two-time Pro Bowl running back is trying to prove that he has enough left in the tank to earn a spot on the 53-man roster.
Gordon rushed six times for 16 yards and caught his only target for nine yards in the team's preseason win on Saturday night. All that work, however, came after intermission. The tea leaves tell us that the veteran is squarely on the roster bubble.
What Did Melvin Gordon Accomplish In 2022?
Did you remember that Melvin Gordon won a Super Bowl last season? He never appeared in a game for the Kansas City Chiefs but was signed to the team's practice squad in November. That was enough to earn the 16-carat ring.
You probably better remember his tenure with the Denver Broncos last season, where he struggled. Prospects were high for the ex-Charger when starter Javonte Williams suffered a season-ending knee injury. In the end, he only logged 90 carries for 318 yards and two touchdowns before being shown his walking papers. In 10 games, Gordon fumbled five times, losing two of them.
Will Melvin Gordon Make Baltimore's Roster?
When the whole RB room is healthy and available, J.K. Dobbins and Gus Edwards are the guys getting touches. Gordon is competing against undrafted rookie Keaton Mitchell and veteran Justice Hill for a spot. Hill, a 2019 fourth-round pick, re-signed with the Ravens on a two-year deal this offseason and offers a lot on special teams.
Gordon is on a one-year, $1.165 million contract that includes no guaranteed money. J.K. Dobbins and Gus Edwards are both slated to become free agents when the season ends. If they're keeping the future in mind, the Ravens may elect to keep the rookie Mitchell over Gordon.
Regardless of if Gordon makes the team or not, he's not on fantasy radars this season, barring an injury to Dobbins and Edwards. In deeper leagues, you'd be better off taking the shot on Hill or Mitchell.
