Kansas City Chiefs defensive lineman Chris Jones was the 37th overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft. The superstar defensive lineman had an excellent college career, totaling 102 tackles, 18 tackles for a loss, and 8.5 sacks in three years at Mississippi State.
Jones had a quiet first two years in the NFL, totaling only 10 tackles for a loss and 8.5 sacks in 32 games. However, he had a breakout year in 2018 with 19 tackles for a loss and 15.5 sacks, finishing third in the NFL in sacks. More importantly, the superstar defensive lineman has been nearly unstoppable since then.
The former Mississippi State star had 19 tackles for a loss and 25 sacks over the next three years, totaling at least 7.5 sacks every season. Furthermore, Jones made the pro bowl every year and was named AP All-Pro Second Team twice during those three years. However, the superstar took his game to another level in 2022.

What Did Chris Jones Accomplish In 2022?
Last year Jones had the best season of his career. The superstar defensive lineman had 44 tackles, 17 tackles for a loss, 29 quarterback hits, and 15.5 sacks, all career highs. Furthermore, he also led all interior defenders in PFF grade, pressures, sacks, win percentage, and sack percentage.
More importantly, the veteran made the AP All-Pro First Team for the first time in his career. Jones also finished third in the Defensive Player of the Year award race behind Nick Bosa and Micah Parsons.
Will The Chiefs Sign Chris Jones To A Contract Extension?
The superstar defensive lineman is entering the final year of his contract in 2023. Jones will count for over $28 million on the team’s salary cap this season. However, the Chiefs can lower that number by signing the veteran to a contract extension.
Reportedly, Jones wants a new deal worth $30 million a year. That would make him the second-highest-paid defensive player in the NFL, behind Aaron Donald.
Unfortunately, the Chiefs and Jones are reportedly far apart in contract talks. The superstar defensive lineman reportedly won’t report to training camp.
Hopefully, a long-term extension can get worked out sooner than later. However, Chief fans should expect this saga to continue for at least the next few weeks.
