Los Angeles Chargers running back Austin Ekeler wanted to get traded by the franchise earlier in the offseason when he wasn't offered a contract extension to his liking.
The Chargers opted not to trade their star running back. Ekeler, who is already 28 years old, was not able to secure a big contract.
In this article, we will discuss whether the Chargers will offer a new deal to Ekeler in the future and what the future holds for the player who scored the most touchdowns last season.

Are The Chargers Offering A Contract Extension To Austin Ekeler?
With how things are currently constructed, the Los Angeles Chargers are unlikely to offer an extension to Austin Ekeler. The running back will be 29 years old when the season starts, and the franchise is already dealing with cap issues.
They are projected to offload several veteran players after this upcoming season, and Ekeler could be one of them. Running backs like Saquon Barkley and Josh Jacobs were also not offered lucrative deals by their franchises, which is why the situation has worsened for the Western Colorado product.
The Chargers currently don't have any good running backs on their roster to replace Ekeler, but they could draft one early next year. As long as they have Justin Herbert, the AFC West franchise will remain a playoff contender.
Austin Ekeler Will Be A Free Agent Next Year
Since Austin Ekeler will be a free agent next year, he will enter the 2023 season with full motivation to put up a monster season. This could help him land a good deal with another team next season; however, that could be tough given how Dalvin Cook's situation has panned out.
Nevertheless, Ekeler is still likely to dominate and rack up a lot of points for fantasy managers. Last season, the Chargers back had 204 carries for 915 yards and scored 18 touchdowns in 17 games. Out of the 18 total touchdowns, he had five receiving touchdowns, which displays his prowess as a dual-threat RB.
