Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow has been a starter since entering the league in 2020, and after three seasons as a pro, he's eligible for a contract extension. Given how he's played so far, there's no doubt he will get an extension – but it remains to be seen if it will happen before the 2023 NFL season begins.
Lamar Jackson and Jalen Hurts recently cashed in on mega-deals paying them north of $50 million per year, so Burrow could be looking at that kind of money should he get extended this offseason.
How has Burrow played thus far and what could his contract be worth? Let's dive in.
Joe Burrow Career Review
In three seasons with the Bengals, Burrow has thrown for 11,774 yards, 82 touchdowns, and 31 interceptions. The LSU product posted a 2-7-1 record as a rookie before tearing his ACL, but the team has gone 22-10 over the last two seasons.
In his second year (2021), Cincinnati won its first playoff game since 1990 and made it all the way to the Super Bowl, losing to the Los Angeles Rams. In 2022, the team made it back to the AFC title game but came up just short against Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs.
Needless to say, the 26-year-old franchise QB has turned around the organization for the better after decades of mediocrity and it could be time for him to be rewarded monetarily.
What Could Burrow's Contract Be Worth?
Burrow confirmed on Tuesday that he and the team continue to work on a long-term contract extension after the Bengals unsurprisingly picked up his fifth-year option. "I'm involved. That's in the works," Burrow said. "That's not really something that I like to play out in the media. That's something — just the way, I think, they want to do business, I want to do business, we prefer to keep that between us."
It sounds as though the 26-year-old may not break the bank in order to leave some money on the table for his teammates that also need extensions, but he's still going to be paid very handsomely when all is said and done.
That said, Burrow could likely become the highest-paid player in the NFL if he'd like to do so. Jalen Hurts signed an extension and will earn $51 million per year, while Lamar Jackson beat his figure and win earn $52 million per year. Burrow could potentially top those deals, but we'll see if he actually does give the team a hometown discount in order to keep key players like Ja'Marr Chase and Tee Higgins long-term.
