San Francisco 49ers quarterback Trey Lance was the third-overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. The 49ers traded the 12th overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, a pair of future first-round picks, and a third-round selection to the Miami Dolphins for the ability to select Lance.
The former North Dakota State sparingly played as a rookie. However, he was impressive when given a chance. In the 2.5 games the rookie played as the starter, Lance had 598 passing yards and four touchdowns. Furthermore, he added 161 rushing yards in those contests.
Lance was named the Week 1 starter last year, with Jimmy Garoppolo sliding into a backup role. The former North Dakota State star was productive in a rainstorm. He had 164 passing yards and 54 rushing yards. Unfortunately, Lance suffered a season-ending ankle injury early in the Week 2 matchup against the Seattle Seahawks.

Will The 49ers Trade Trey Lance?
After the second-year quarterback suffered the season-ending injury, Garoppolo took over as the starter. However, he suffered a season-ending foot injury that paved the way for Brock Purdy to take over under center. While Garoppolo signed with the Las Vegas Raiders this offseason, Purdy will return in 2023.
Earlier today, general manager John Lynch said Lance, Purdy, and newly signed Sam Darnold would compete for the starting job next season. However, Lynch said Purdy is “the leader in the clubhouse” if/when the quarterback is healthy.
More importantly, Lynch didn’t close the door on a potential Lance trade. While he said they like having the young quarterback on the roster, Lynch will listen to anything.
Which Teams Would Be The Best Fit For Trey Lance?
While the 49ers aren’t actively shopping the former first-round pick, the team seems willing to trade Lance for the right price. One potential landing spot is the Tennessee Titans.
The Titans hired Ran Carthon as their new general manager this offseason. Carthon spent the last six years in San Francisco front office. Furthermore, he was promoted to the director of player personnel in 2021, the same year the team drafted Lance.
Meanwhile, Ryan Tannehill is entering the final year of his contract. Tennessee can save $17.8 million by releasing or trading the veteran this offseason. If the 49ers are really open to trading away Lance, the Titans would be an excellent and logical landing spot.
