The Pittsburgh Steelers added Russell Wilson this offseason, with the anticipated result of that being that Wilson would be the team's starting quarterback.
But a preseason calf injury opened the door for former Chicago Bears quarterback Justin Fields to take over as the team's starter.
With Russell Wilson cleared to practice in full, the question now is if he'll take over the starting job or not.
Through five weeks with Justin Fields as the starting quarterback, the Pittsburgh Steelers sit at 3-2. The team has lost two in a row.
Fields has had some ups and some downs this season. He has three games with under 200 yards passing, but he's also added three rushing touchdowns and has been picked off just one time all year.
Say what you will about Justin Fields. But when the game’s on the line. He makes plays. Clutch drive. pic.twitter.com/qzxpOQyGNI
But then there are the fumble concerns, as Fields has fumbled in four of the five games so far, including two fumbles in a Week 4 loss to the Colts. He threw for a season-high 312 yards in that game.
It's hard to get a sense of what to think about Fields right now. The positives outweigh the negatives when you're winning, but the two-game losing streak introduces plenty of question marks.
Is Russell Wilson Going To Start This Season?
Two weeks ago, I would have given this an emphatic no, but two straight losses with three fumbles has the needle pointing down for Fields.
The Steelers signed Russell Wilson to be their starting quarterback. If Fields is unable to turn things around, it's easy to see a scenario where the team opts to see if Wilson has anything left in the tank, though Fields remains the starter at the moment.
Russell Wilson will be a full participant at practice on Wednesday. He will work with the second team according to Mike Tomlin. Justin Fields will prepare to start again this week for the #steelers.
Wilson's two years in Denver tend to be unfairly maligned. 2022 wasn't good, but Wilson was a fine QB in 2023, completing 66.4% of his passes for 3,070 yards with 26 touchdowns and eight interceptions.
His arm gives you a better shot to win than Fields' arm does, though Fields adds significantly more as a runner. We'll see what head coach Mike Tomlin does, but Wilson will likely get a shot at some point.
