Will Patrick Mahomes Be The Fantasy QB1? Where Should I Draft Patrick Mahomes? Read the 2023 fantasy football outlook.

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes was the 10th overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft. Mahomes had a productive college career, totaling 11,252 passing yards and 93 touchdowns. He also had 845 rushing yards and 22 touchdowns at Texas Tech.

After spending most of his rookie year backing up Alex Smith, Mahomes became a fantasy superstar in 2018. The second-year player was the QB1, averaging 26.1 fantasy points per game. He had 5,098 passing yards and 50 touchdowns. Mahomes finished second in passing yards and first in touchdowns that year, winning his first MVP award.

The former Texas Tech star has been a fantasy superstar since becoming the starter in Kansas City. Mahomes has thrown at least 37 touchdowns in all but one year as the starter. More importantly, he has never finished lower than the QB7 any year since his rookie season.

What Did Patrick Mahomes Accomplish In 2022?

Many were concerned Mahomes would struggle last season after the Chiefs traded away Tyreek Hill in the offseason. However, the superstar showed why he is the top quarterback in the NFL.

The former Texas Tech star had 5,250 passing yards and 41 touchdowns compared to only 12 interceptions. Furthermore, he led the NFL in passing yards and touchdowns, throwing for 511 more yards and six more touchdowns than any other quarterback.

Mahomes also had a productive year in the run game. The veteran quarterback had 61 rushing attempts for 358 yards and four touchdowns. He set a career-high in rushing touchdowns while having the second-most rushing yards of his career.

Will Patrick Mahomes Be The Fantasy QB1?

Last year Mahomes was the QB1, scoring 416.9 fantasy points. However, he was the QB3 on a points-per-game basis, averaging 24.5 fantasy points per contest. Jalen Hurts led the way, averaging 25.2 fantasy points per game. Meanwhile, Josh Allen finished second, averaging 24.7 fantasy points per contest.

However, Mahomes is my QB1 this year because he is the most talented player in the NFL and the safest quarterback to draft. The veteran missed two games in 2019 because of an injury. Yet, he has never finished lower than the QB4 in the other four years as the starter. Furthermore, he has two QB1 finishes, including last season.

Meanwhile, the superstar quarterback is already in midseason form. While the Chiefs lost JuJu Smith-Schuster this offseason, the team has several young wide receivers with significant upside. Unless Travis Kelce suffers a season-ending injury during training camp, Mahomes is my unquestioned QB1.
