The 2023 NFL Draft had a talented running back draft class. While Bijan Robinson and Jahmyr Gibbs were first-round picks, five running backs got drafted on Day 2.
One of those running backs was TCU’s Kendre Miller. He was the fourth running back drafted this year. The New Orleans selected the former Horn Frog star in the third round with the 71st overall pick.
So, what kind of role will the rookie running back have in New Orleans this season?

What Did Kendre Miller Accomplish At TCU?
Miller had a quiet freshman season in 2020, totaling only 54 rushing attempts for 388 yards and two touchdowns. However, he earned more of a role the following season. The former TCU running back had 83 rushing attempts for 623 yards and seven touchdowns in 2021.
Yet, Miller broke out last year. The star running back had 224 rushing attempts for 1,399 yards and 17 touchdowns, leading the team in all three categories. Furthermore, Miller’s 17 rushing touchdowns were the second-most in the Big 12 and the eighth-most in the country.
Will Kendre Miller Have An Expanded Role With The Saints?
While Miller was a third-round pick, some in the fantasy football community are excited about the former TCU running back. One reason why is Alvin Kamara’s incoming suspension from an incident at the Pro Bowl two years ago.
However, New Orleans prepared for Kamara’s incoming suspension. The team signed veteran Jamaal Williams in free agency to a three-year deal worth $12 million. The former Detroit Lion had his first 1,000-yard rushing season last year. More importantly, Williams led the NFL with 17 rushing touchdowns in 2022.
Miller is the No. 3 running back on the depth chart, with two talented veterans ahead of him. While Kamara’s incoming suspension isn’t ideal, the star running back won’t miss the entire 2023 season. Meanwhile, Williams is coming off the best year of his career and signed a significant contract this offseason.
More importantly, the two veteran running backs aren’t the only thing standing in Miller’s way. Last year, Taysom Hill had 96 rushing attempts for 575 yards and seven touchdowns. He finished second in rushing attempts and yards behind Kamara. However, Hill led the team in rushing touchdowns.
Maybe the rookie running back can become a fantasy star in 2024. However, there are too many factors in Miller’s way for me to draft him this year.
