Jared Goff was an afterthought in the deal two offseasons ago that brought Matthew Stafford to the Los Angeles Rams and ultimately resulted in a Super Bowl that next season for LA.
The Rams went all-in and got their title out of it but at the end of the day, Detroit may have benefitted even more than the Rams did. After an injury-riddled season from Stafford and a majority of the roster, the second first-rounder that Los Angeles sent over to Detroit wound up being the sixth overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft.
Jared Goff fought injuries and inconsistent play in his first season in Detroit, but he took off in his second year under Dan Campbell with an elevated offense around him. Will the former number-one overall draft pick start again in 2023?

What Did Jared Goff Do in 2022?
The Detroit Lions improved from 3-13-1 to 9-8 in year 2 under Dan Campbell, just barely missing the playoffs. A large part of their turnaround was a gritty offense that seemed to elevate its play in every facet compared to the 2021 version of the team.
Jared Goff went 382-for-587 for 4,438 yards and 29 touchdowns with just seven interceptions. The veteran benefitted from strong offensive line play as well as a supporting cast including running backs Jamaal Williams and D’Andre Swift along with superstar receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown.
Goff’s performance was good for the tenth-best among quarterbacks in 2022, making him a more-than-viable fantasy option. Still, Detroit missed the playoffs. All options are on the table going forward. Do they stick with Goff, a veteran who just had a ceiling season, or do they pivot at quarterback?
Will Jared Goff Be The Lions' Starting Quarterback in 2023?
Recent rumblings have been that Jared Goff is the guy in Detroit in 2023. Both head coach Dan Campbell and offensive coordinator Ben Johnson have stuck to that statement.
With Jameson Williams returning at full strength, two first-round picks, and being in the top 10 in cap space, Detroit has the ability to build a very competitive team this season. Jared Goff has shown he can succeed on loaded teams, quarterbacking the Rams during their 2018 Super Bowl appearance.
It seems pretty clear that Detriot will not be taking any big swings this offseason and will ride it out with Goff for another year. However, Campbell was quick to say that quarterback is a position that the organization is thinking about.
While Goff is likely the starter for 2023 in Detroit, do not be surprised if the Lions take a swing in the near future. Goff is under contract through the end of the 2024 season, but would likely need to elevate his play even further to secure another contract with Detroit.
