Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer wrote that San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy is gaining rapid grounds on his path to full recovery. He revealed that last year’s “Mr. Irrelevant” is on a controlled throwing program but releases balls without pain. The next phase will be increasing the distance and velocity of his throws. Barring any delays, Purdy might participate in the 49ers’ mandatory minicamp this month. Maintaining the pace of his recovery might make him available for training camp.

Sam Darnold and Trey Lance are competing for first-team reps come training camp. However, Purdy remains the frontrunner after an impressive 2022 campaign. The former Iowa State standout took over from Jimmy Garoppolo and won his five regular season starts. He finished the regular season with 114 completions for 1,374 yards, 13 touchdowns, and only four interceptions. Purdy also had one rushing touchdown from 22 carries. He also led the 49ers to playoff victories against the Seattle Seahawks and the Dallas Cowboys. Those wins made him the lowest-drafted quarterback to win in a postseason start.
Unfortunately, he couldn’t replicate those results in the NFC Championship Game against the Philadelphia Eagles after suffering a complete tear on his ulnar collateral ligament. That condition prevented him from throwing the ball for more than ten yards. Despite his limitations, Purdy returned to the game after Josh Johnson suffered a concussion. However, he was limited to handing off balls to Christian McCaffrey and other 49ers’ skill position players.
Will Brock Purdy play in Week 1?
If his recovery goes smoothly, Purdy might suit up for the 49ers in Week 1 against the Pittsburgh Steelers on the road. However, San Francisco head coach Kyle Shanahan said they would treat Purdy’s recovery cautiously. They don’t want him to return sooner than expected and would rather have him stay on time.
Meanwhile, 49ers general manager John Lynch hopes he will be ready by training camp. That development will increase Purdy’s chances of becoming the Week 1 starter if he is.
In an interview with NBC Sports Bay Area, Purdy said his arm is feeling good and working to be ready by opening week. The team’s fans would love to see that happening, enabling him to build on his initial success.
