Will Aaron Jones Be Released By The Packers?

Aaron Jones - Fantasy Football Rankings, Draft Sleepers, NFL Injury News

Green Bay Packers running back Aaron Jones has had an excellent career. The veteran running back was a fifth-round pick in the 2017 NFL Draft.

The former UTEP star had a quiet rookie season, totaling only 81 rushing attempts for 448 yards and four touchdowns. However, Jones has been a fantasy star over the past few seasons.

Over the past four years, the former fifth-round pick has averaged 257 touches for 1,430.7 scrimmage yards and 11.8 touchdowns per season. More importantly, Jones averaged 15.3 half-point PPR fantasy points per game during that span.

Will Aaron Jones Be Released By The Packers?

While he is heading into his seventh year in the NFL, Jones remains one of the best running backs in the league. Furthermore, the star running back has totaled at least 1,000 rushing yards in three of the past four seasons.

However, Jones might have played his final game with the Packers. Green Bay could release the veteran running back this offseason in a salary cap-saving move. The team can save up to $16 million this offseason by cutting Jones.

The veteran running back’s fate might come down to Aaron Rodgers. If the future Hall of Famer returns to Green Bay, he will want Jones on the roster. However, the former UTEP star will likely get cut if the Packers trade Rodgers this offseason.

Which Teams Could Sign Aaron Jones This Offseason?

If Green Bay cuts the veteran running back, Jones will have plenty of options on the open market. After the 2020 season, Jones was going to be a free agent. Reportedly, the Miami Dolphins and Jones had mutual interest. However, the running back re-signed with the Packers.

Last year the Dolphins were a bottom 10 team in rushing attempts and yards, as Raheem Mostert and Jeff Wilson Jr. lead the Miami backfield. However, the duo combined for under 1,400 rushing yards. Furthermore, both are free agents this offseason.

Miami had one of the top passing attacks last year. Now they need to find a more consistent and reliable running game. The Dolphins would be foolish not to sign Jones if he hits the open market.

Another potential landing spot is the Las Vegas Raiders. If they don’t place the franchise tag on Josh Jacobs, he likely will find a better offer on the open market. More importantly, many expect the Raiders to trade for Rodgers. If Las Vegas loses Jacobs, Rodgers could push for the Raiders to sign Jones.
