Why Did The Washington Commanders Fire Ron Rivera?
After going 8-8-1 in 2022, the Washington Commanders entered 2023 in a weird spot. The team was going to be turning to second-year quarterback Sam Howell to lead the way, but a talented defense was expected to keep the team competitive.
Instead, the Commanders' offense played relatively well while the defense was a disaster. Per Pro Football Reference, the team had a -8.4 Defensive SRS this season, by far the worst of any team Rivera has ever coached. Considering Rivera is known as a defensive guy, that's simply not the situation that the Commanders' management wanted to see.
By the end of the season, it was clear that the situation in Washington was untenable. The Commanders need to reset things and will have a chance this offseason. Rivera finishes his four years in Washington with a 26-40-1 record.
Potential Commanders Head Coach Candidates
Who'll replace Ron Rivera in Washington? So far, the team has requested to interview seven candidates.
The Commanders will attempt to interview Lions' OC Ben Johnson, Ravens' DC Mike Macdonald, Texans' OC Bobby Slowik, Cowboys' DC Dan Quinn, Rams DC Raheem Morris, Lions DC Aaron Glenn, and Ravens' AHC Anthony Weaver.
Washington is also looking for a new general manager and is set to interview five candidates for that position, all of whom are currently assistant general managers in the NFL.
