It's frustrating to have players on your fantasy football rosters who don't put up good numbers consistently. It can be difficult to know when to start them, if they're every-week starters, or if you should bench them for an extended period.
A lot of factors determine how many points a given player scores. Their talent is obviously important, but it's not the only thing. Their role in the offense, the quality of the team around them, and matchups with opposing defenses are crucial as well.
Let's look at three commonly rostered players and whether you should start them.
Should I Start Nick Chubb for Fantasy Football?
Cleveland Browns running back Nick Chubb finally had a big game in Week 12, scoring 19 PPR fantasy points by carrying the ball 20 times for 59 yards and two touchdowns and catching one pass for one yard. His scoring was fully TD-dependent, though. He has nearly zero receiving upside and has been extremely inefficient.

His role is very valuable -- he's the bell-cow RB of this offense. But he's not his old self. That's no surprise since he had a devastating knee injury to end his 2023 season. It's worth questioning if he will ever get back to his former elite-ness. Still, he's a worthy RB3/flex in most leagues due to his role, though he's a risky start.
Should I Start Zay Flowers for Fantasy Football?
Baltimore Ravens wide receiver Zay Flowers has cooled off significantly in recent weeks after a ridiculous hot streak in Weeks 5-9 that saw him score totals of 19.0, 22.4, 18.5, and 29.7 PPR fantasy points. Since then, he's had three straight games with under 12 points. Still, he's had 26 targets in his last four games.

However, the nightmare of all nightmare matchups awaits him. He must face the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 13. They were somehow allowed to draft cornerback Quinyon Mitchell at spot 22, and he's been utterly elite. He's locked down every WR he's faced in coverage. If there's any week to bench Flowers, it'll be this one.
In non-PPR leagues, he should not be started. In PPR, you're praying for a few receptions to boost his floor. He's moved around the formation quite a bit, so it wouldn't be a total disaster to start him, but his upside will probably be very restricted.
Should I Start Tony Pollard for Fantasy Football?
Start him. Tennessee Titans running back Tony Pollard will have a solid matchup with the Washington Commanders, who haven't been great against the run. The team has indicated that it'd love to reduce his workload, but backup RB Tyjae Spears (concussion) just hasn't provided a spark yet.
I mean this is just absolutely remarkable by Tony Pollard. #TitanUp pic.twitter.com/kp3AM153Vc

A big reason why is that the Titans have a poor offensive line. Pollard has played excellent football. Spears isn't on the same level and isn't able to will himself to big gains despite the poor blocking afforded to him. Pollard is the guy.
