Who Plays Saturday Football Today?
Minnesota Vikings @ Cincinnati Bengals
Sat., Dec. 16, 1 pm, NFL Network
The excitement starts with the Cincinnati Bengals playing host to the Minnesota Vikings. Both have had their starting quarterbacks injured and had ups and downs this season. Both are 7-6, and both are at risk of missing the playoffs if they don't win today.
Pittsburgh Steelers @ Indianapolis Colts
Sat., Dec. 16, 4:30 pm, NFL Network
The Pittsburgh Steelers and Indianapolis Colts are also both 7-6, and they occupy the No. 6 and No. 7 spots in the AFC playoff picture respectively. Like the above game, both teams will also be missing their starting quarterbacks this week. Pittsburgh's Pickett (ankle) has been ruled out of Week 15, but he'll probably be back later this season. Unlike the Vikings and Bengals, the Steelers and Colts are both playing in the same conference and competing directly against each other for one of the final playoff spots.
Denver Broncos @ Detroit Lions
Sat., Dec. 16, 8:15 pm, NFL Network
The Denver Broncos are on a hot streak, having won six of the last seven games, while the Detroit Lions have run up against adversity. The Lions have lost two of the last three and three of the last seven, including a bad loss to the Chicago Bears last week. They still hang onto a two-game lead in the NFC North, but the division is not assured if they continue struggling.
Who is Favored to Win Today?
Each game today is expected to be competitive. No team is favored by greater than 4.5 points, and the Steelers @ Colts matchup is almost a toss-up, with the home Colts only favored by one point. Each team has looked strong at times, but they all have flaws.
The betting lines are as follows:
- Cincinnati Bengals (-3 / -170) favored over the Minnesota Vikings
- Indianapolis Colts (-1 / -119) favored over the Pittsburgh Steelers
- Detroit Lions (-5 / -187) favored over the Denver Broncos
The line for the Broncos @ Lions has been shifting all week, and it shifted again on game day. It went from DET -4 on December 14 to DET -4.5 yesterday and now DET -5. If you had locked in Detroit earlier, you could have gotten good value, but now the gameday value might have shifted to Denver.
What Are the Playoff Implications of the Saturday Football Games in Week 15?
Whichever team loses the Steelers @ Colts game is likely to fall out of the playoff race (and both teams, if they tie). Six AFC teams are tied with 7-6 records. The Houston Texans would be thrust into the playoff picture if they can beat the Tennessee Titans on Sunday.
The Denver Broncos are next in line if they win today and the Texans lose. The Bengals and Bills, respectively, are the next two teams in line should multiple teams fall.
As for the Detroit Lions and the Minnesota Vikings, they play in Week 16 and again in Week 18. If the Lions lose and the Vikings win, their matchup next week would be for control of the NFC North lead.
