Who is the Patriots' Starting QB in 2024 with Mac Jones Gone?

The New England Patriots entered the 2024 offseason with a clear need at the quarterback position. Mac Jones and Bailey Zappe split quarterback reps last season, but neither really showed much across 17 games. 

Now, the quarterback position is an even bigger need after the Patriots shipped Jones to the Jacksonville Jaguars this offseason. New England traded the young quarterback for a sixth-round pick, effectively ending his three-year tenure with the team.

Who is the Current Patriots Starting QB in 2024? 

It's hard to fully say who the Patriots' starting quarterback will be in 2024 without the NFL Draft occurring. However, the favorite right now is Jacoby Brissett. 

Brissett was a free agent this offseason and quickly agreed to a one-year, $8 million deal with the Patriots. The 31-year-old has flopped around between starter and backup roles his whole career, though he has always done well when given opportunities.

Trade: Patriots are finalizing a deal to send QB Mac Jones to the Jacksonville Jaguars, sources tell ESPN. The trade cannot be processed until the new league year begins Wednesday and he passes a physical. The two sides were discussing a 6th-round pick, per sources.

In 2022 -- when he started for a suspended Deshaun Watson to begin the season -- he threw for 2,608 yards, 12 touchdowns, and six interceptions in 11 starts. Then, last year, he threw for 224 yards and three touchdowns in three games with the Commanders. If the season started today, Brissett would likely be the Patriots starter with Zappe backing him up. 

Who will be the Patriots' Starting QB by Week 1? 

Although Brissett is probably the team's starting quarterback right now, that could surely change by Week 1. The Patriots hold the third overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, and there's a strong chance they select a quarterback with that pick. 

With the Chicago Bears and Washington Commanders picking in front of them in the draft, New England should still be in a solid spot to select a top quarterback. Whichever quarterback of Drake Maye or Jayden Daniels falls to them at three should be the clear favorite.

If the Patriots do wind up selecting a quarterback with that pick, Maye or Daniels should also be the favorite to start Week 1. There's a possibility New England does go with Brissett to start the season, but one of those rookie quarterbacks should get their shot eventually by the end of the season.
