The Green Bay Packers missed the postseason for the first time since 2018 this year, finishing with an 8-9 record after losing to the Detroit Lions in the 2022 season finale in Lambeau.
Looking ahead at the upcoming 2023 season, Green Bay’s front office has a plethora of decisions to make. A season after dealing away leading receiver Davante Adams, longtime quarterback Aaron Rodgers has one year remaining on his contract which is structured in a way that he could easily get out of it.
Green Bay will be picking 15th in the 2023 draft, one season after selecting a pair of former Georgia Bulldogs in LB Quay Walker and DT Devonte Wyatt in last year’s first round.

How Did Green Bay Perform in 2022?
After starting the season 4-8, Green Bay ended 8-9 and nearly pulled off an improbable run to the playoffs following a five-game losing streak in the middle of the season.
Aaron Rodgers started 17 games and went 350-for-542 for 3,695 yards with 26 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. Following back-to-back MVP seasons, the loss of Davante Adams impacted Rodgers’ 2023 season.
The Packers consistently struggled to get pressure on opposing quarterbacks, finishing with the fifth-least sacks in the NFL with 34. Rashan Gary finished second on the team in sacks despite only playing nine games due to a torn ACL.
The offensive line performed well overall, surrendering the seventh-least sacks on the season and paving the way for 2,113 yards on the ground. Green Bay already resigned T Elgton Jenkins to a four-year, $68 million extension.
What Needs Does Green Bay Face?
The immediate future of Green Bay’s quarterback room is in question, as Aaron Rodgers could easily be traded or retire with former first-round pick Jordan Love waiting for his chance to lead the team.
The speculations that ramped up all offseason surrounding Rodgers will follow again this offseason.
If Green Bay loses Rodgers and turns to Love, they could start a rebuild. If they keep Rodgers, they will attempt to build a contending team. Either way, they are going to need to add weapons.
Rookie receivers Christian Watson and Romeo Doubs played well this season, but leading receiver Allen Lazard is on his way out.
Defensively, the team needs more depth in their pass-rushing rotation. Aside from Rashan Gary and Preston Smith, they struggled to generate pressure. Rookie Kingsley Enagbare showed flashes replacing Gary and could factor into the rotation next season.
Green Bay’s one-two punch at cornerback between Jaire Alexander and Rasul Douglas should be strong heading into 2023 and should not be a primary focus for their top draft pick.
What Prospects Could Green Bay Target?
At pick 15, Green Bay may want to sit and see which of the top prospects fall down the board. They have no absolutely glaring needs and could benefit from taking a similar approach as they did in last year’s draft in which they came away with two locked-in starters on their defense for the next few seasons.
Green Bay has not selected a first-round receiver since 2002 despite WR consistently being one of the biggest holes on the roster. If Ohio State WR Jaxon Smith-Njigba falls to pick 15 after missing most of the 2022 season with a hamstring injury, the Packers would be wise to pull the trigger on him.
Notre Dame EDGE Isaiah Foskey is another intriguing prospect that could factor into Green Bay’s pass-rushing rotation. Pairing Foskey with Gary, Smith, and Enagbare could create havoc for opposing offensive lines.
Penn State cornerback Joey Porter Jr. is another name who floats around the 10-20 range in current mock drafts. Porter has a very high ceiling and could follow rookies Sauce Gardner and Derek Stingley Jr. as immediate an impact player. While corner is not a need for Green Bay, the opportunity to pair Alexander and Douglas with Porter could be too good to pass up.
There is bound to be a shake-up in mock drafts as we advance throughout the draft process and see different prospects’ stocks rise and fall, but the best-on-the-board approach is Green Bay’s best bet to either build a contending roster around Rodgers or stock up on young talent around Love.
