Trevor Story was once one of the premier fantasy baseball shortstops one could hope for. After a massive debut in which he slugged 27 homers alongside eight stolen bases in just 97 games in the 2016 season, Story endured a sophomore slump the following season. However, Story would go on to pound out 72 home runs alongside 50 stolen bases across the next two seasons, cementing himself as one of the top power/speed threats in baseball.
He continued to produce through the shortened 2020 season before the drop-off began. Despite 24 homers and 20 steals in 2021, his 98 wRC+ fell below the league average. Injuries would kick in following a move to the Red Sox in 2022 as Tommy John surgery, among other ailments, limited him to just 137 of a possible 324 games (42.9%) across the 2022 and 2023 campaigns.
Unfortunately, Story suffered a serious shoulder injury just eight games into the 2024 campaign, forcing him to undergo surgery and a subsequent trip to the 60-day injured list. Let's check in on Story's status and whether or not he can return in the 2024 season.

Trevor Story Injury Update for Fantasy Baseball
Story suffered a fractured glenoid in his left shoulder when he dove for a ground ball during an April 6 contest against the Los Angeles Angels. He was forced to undergo surgery and was given a six-month timeline for a return, giving him no chance to return during the 2024 season.
Hopefully Trevor Story is ok.
Extremely important player to this Red Sox team. They need him.
Looks like a shoulder dislocation, hopefully he didn’t shred his labrum.

The injury is cataclysmic for all involved. Story noted before the season he felt healthy for the first time in a long time after he fell off at the plate in his return from Tommy John surgery late in the 2023 season. Unfortunately, fantasy managers will be without his services for the remainder of the 2024 season and his outlook beyond this year is cloudy, at best.
Trevor Story Fantasy Baseball Outlook
Even before having his season cut short just eight games in, Story wasn't exactly off to a strong start. Fantasy managers were certainly intrigued by his 1.088 OPS in spring training but the 31-year-old was unable to translate that into the regular season. Story hit just .226 without a homer alongside one steal and a .617 OPS across 34 plate appearances before hitting the shelf.
It was an inauspicious start after he hit just .203 with three homers and a .566 OPS after his return from TJ surgery a season ago.
Now, his future is as murky as ever. He now has a major elbow and shoulder surgery under his belt while his 2022 ailments consisted of right hand and left foot injuries, mostly to his foot. Clearly, his body has taken a beating and whether he can return to full health at any point moving forward is anybody's guess, but it appears unlikely.
Fantasy managers can safely cut bait and keep an eye on Story when he (hopefully) returns for spring training next season.
