When is Max Meyer getting called up? Will Max Meyer play in May of this MLB season? Read about Max Meyer's return date and fantasy baseball prospect updates for 2024.
After making the playoffs last year, the Miami Marlins have had a disappointing start to the season this year. They are 18-34 and currently have the league's third-worst record.
One of the brightest spots of their season so far has been the games that starting pitcher Max Meyer played at the start of the season. However, the Marlins optioned him to their AAA-affiliated team, Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp, after just three games.
What's the latest update on Meyer? Will the Marlins call him up again this season? Let's take a look at the latest update around him and the NL East club.
Max Meyer Prospect Update for Fantasy Baseball
Max Meyer made his debut in the Majors in 2022, but he missed the next 19 months due to Tommy John surgery, which he had in August 2022. He made the Marlins' opening-day roster as starting pitchers Sandy Alcantara, Eury Perez, Edward Cabrera, and Braxton Garrett were all dealing with injuries.
The decision to send Meyer back to AAA was solely to take care of the 25-year-old players' health. The Marlins know that they have no shot at competing this season and want to preserve their rising star. The Marlins know that they have a great pitcher in Meyer and want to be careful with his usage. Many star pitchers have already suffered season-ending injuries this year, and the struggling NL East team is cautious about their emerging star pitcher.
Both Perez and Alcantara are ruled out for the entire season, and the team has also traded Luis Arraez to the San Diego Padres. The Marlins are expected to trade more veteran players around the trade deadline, and it's likely that Meyer will be back in the majors during the last quarter of the season.
Max Meyer Outlook for Fantasy Baseball
Max Meyer pitched 17 innings in the three games that he played for the Marlins this year. He had a 2.12 ERA, giving up 11 hits and two home runs while also recording 14 strikeouts.
Despite a good outing in the Majors, Meyer has surprisingly struggled for Jacksonville in the AAA. In six games for them, he has a 6.86 ERA, has given up 24 hits and four home runs, and has walked 10 batters in 19.2 innings pitched.
The Marlins are strategically managing Meyer's workload in AAA, as he hasn't pitched more than four innings in any game since he was optioned. While it is expected that Meyer will play for the Marlins again this year, the third overall pick from the 2020 MLB Draft needs to put up better performances in AAA.
