Los Angeles Chargers running back Gus Edwards (ankle) was placed on injured reserve after his Week 4 game against the Kansas City Chiefs and has not returned to action since. He's now missed three weeks of his mandatory four-game absence required by IR rules, and will first be eligible to return in a Week 10 matchup with the Tennessee Titans.
Even when he has played, it's been a very quiet season for the former Baltimore Raven. He was a fantasy darling for a nice stretch in 2023, scoring 13 rushing touchdowns on the season and finishing as the overall RB25 in full-PPR. However, this season, he's averaging just under 3 yards per carry and hasn't scored more than six PPR points in a game yet.
When will Edwards return, and what's his fantasy football outlook when he's back on the field?

Gus Edwards Injury Update for Fantasy Football
Updates on his injury situation have been sparse, which isn't surprising, considering he will be forced to miss Week 9. There hasn't been any negative news, though, so fantasy managers who are still hanging on to him should expect him to return some time around Weeks 10-11.

His injury isn't season-ending in all likelihood. Managers should check back for updates around one week from now. He may not make much of an impact in fantasy football this year, though.
Gus Edwards Fantasy Football Outlook
Things are looking grim. Combine the injury with his chart-busting inefficiency, lack of a single touchdown, and general sluggishness on film, and you have a player that's headed out of the league soon. He showed a clear downtrend in usage in his last two games as well.
JK Dobbins RB rush share by week
48% --> 45% --> 83%He also saw a season-high 64% snap rate. Playing from behind may have influenced the change, but Dobbins has also been notably more efficient with his opportunities than Gus Edwards.

He's unlikely to earn much work back from lead back J.K. Dobbins, who appears to have taken over the starting role, and has been much more efficient overall than The Gus Bus. It's possible the split could even out if Dobbins regresses, but it's also likely rookie RB Kimani Vidal could take over Edwards' role, leaving little work left.
