It was a successful rookie season for Miami Marlins pitcher Eury Perez after making his MLB debut at 20 years old in 2023. Perez finished with a 3.15 ERA and 108 strikeouts across 91.1 innings pitched. That helped him finish seventh in the National League Rookie of the Year voting.
However, the right-hander won't have a chance to follow up on that campaign. Perez suffered a finger issue in the middle of spring training and then experienced elbow soreness shortly after.
How bad is Perez's injury? Will he pitch in 2024? Let's dive in and find out.

Eury Perez Injury Update for Fantasy Baseball
On Wednesday, March 13, Eury Perez was in line to start his fourth spring training game. However, after just three batters, Perez promptly left the game. The Marlins announced the pitcher's exit was due to a broken fingernail on his right middle finger, but more bad news came the 20-year-old's way.
Perez started experiencing elbow soreness shortly after that outing. Miami decided to shut down the right-hander from throwing, but the good news was that there was no structural damage -- only mild elbow inflammation. He began to play catch on March 23 before seeking a second opinion.
That second opinion, though, has turned out to end his season. The Marlins officially announced on Thursday that Perez will undergo season-ending Tommy John surgery. The young pitcher will now be out for the entire 2024 season and likely for some of the 2025 campaign as well.
Right-hander Eury Perez, one of the best pitching prospects in recent years, will undergo Tommy John surgery and miss the 2024 season, per the Marlins. In a year of awful pitching injuries, this is among the worst: a 20-year-old handled with immense care still gets hurt.

Eury Perez Fantasy Baseball Outlook
If you drafted Perez in fantasy this year, you can safely drop him from your roster. He won't pitch in 2024, and there's no reason he should occupy one of your injured list slots.
In dynasty formats, he could be a nice buy-low option. At just 20 years old, he has a bright future ahead of him, especially after a strong rookie campaign. Fantasy managers trying to win now might be looking to ship him off since he won't pitch this year and likely will be limited in 2025.

It's a tough break for Perez, who was set for another solid year. He was a top-100 pick in most fantasy leagues, and a true breakout was in store. But he'll have to wait until 2025 to pitch in another major league game.
