Who is going to be the top waiver wire pickup next week? Why didn’t I stash that guy before the games started?
These are things we all wonder as the weekly waiver wire deadline approaches in the middle of the next week. This article will give a quick look at some sleepers that could be on the top of the waiver wire next week, or not, if we preemptively pick them up. Staying ahead of the curve in fantasy football can yield you waiver wire treasures, and save you FAAB money (or your waiver position).
Typically throughout the season, I try to keep one of my roster spots as a revolving door of waiver wire pickups that I believe have boom-or-bust potential and fantasy upside. This can change often, but coming into every Sunday I will re-evaluate and pick one player based on my future needs and roll the dice before that week’s games start. With this is mind, we can use the different games to our advantage (as the schedule allows). An example would be picking up a 1 PM player, and then dropping them for a 4 PM player if they do not impress.
Potential Week 6 Breakouts & Waiver Wire Stashes
This is a tough week (strategy wise) to maximize potential for dropping players from earlier games that don’t pan out, as I don’t see much potential in the later games in the day. I would suggest to heavily consider stashing one of the below 1 PM players off the waiver wire based on your needs if you have the room. Also remember to revisit these posts in future weeks to review the players listed, as some of these players might not become relevant until later on in the season. Let’s get to it.
Sunday 1 PM Pregame Stashes
Aaron Dobson (WR, NE) - 27% owned in Fleaflicker
The Patriots need to find a go-to wide receiver outside of Edelman if they are going to keep winning games. Dobson is currently the only viable option that could play this role. After issues with the coaching staff and sitting out a few games as inactive, Dobson should be back in the lineup for Week 6 against the Bills and could be a Week 7 waiver wire candidate if he has a good game. There is still hope here.
Davante Adams (WR, GB) - 9% owned in Fleaflicker
Davante Adams has shown some of his skills already including a touchdown in Week 5, and a touchdown that was called back and never showed up on the score sheet in Week 4. Rodgers is gaining trust in his young #3 receiver, and it looks like the job is his for the rest of the season with Jarett Boykin dealing with an injury. If Davante is still available in your league, I would stash him off the waiver wire because he could be a top fantasy wide receiver if Cobb or Nelson were to go down with an injury.
Jarius Wright (WR, MIN) - 6% owned in Fleaflicker
As we look forward and into the Teddy Bridgewater era for the Vikings, we have already had a glimpse of what he could do to elevate the team's passing game. Not necessarily for Corderrelle Patterson or Greg Jennings, who came into the season as the #1 and #2 wide receivers, but for Jarius Wright who has been sneakily emerging. Wright and Bridgewater practiced together on the second string unit a lot during the early part of the season, and already have some great chemistry. When Bridgewater starts as the Vikings quarterback again in Week 6 (after sitting out a week with an injury), expect for him to target Wright all game long.
C.J. Anderson (RB, DEN) - 9% owned in Fleaflicker
I wrote about C.J Anderson here last week and wrote a sleeper post earlier on him this week. If Ronnie Hillman fumbles away his chance as the starting running back, it will for sure be the C.J. Anderson show in Denver until Montee Ball is ready to return. I have him stashed off the Week 6 waiver wire on multiple benches anticipating this scenario, and recommend that you do the same if you have the roster room.
Marquise Lee (WR, JAX) - 12% owned in Fleaflicker
Lee is expected to play in his first game back this Sunday (after missing a few weeks with injury) for a Jacksonville WR unit that is starving for some production. Lee is a complete flier right now as we have not seen him in game action with Bortles yet, but this 2nd round 2014 draft choice has a good amount of upside if he can find some chemistry with Blake Bortles.
Sunday 4 PM Pregame Stashes
Jordan Reed (TE, WAS) - 60% owned in Fleaflicker
Jordan Reed is expected to finally return to the field from a hamstring injury this week, likely sending Niles Paul to the bench and taking over the TE1 role on the team. Reed could immediately slide in as Kirk Cousins #1 passing target this week and moving forward, as Cousins loves looking to his tight ends often when slinging the ball. To add to that, Washington’s matchup this week doesn’t hurt either as the Cardinals currently give up the 5th most points to tight ends in PPR leagues. He's a solid waiver wire pickup if he's still available, and a decent bet to insert into your Week 6 lineups.
Previous Quick Hits
Based on my suggested waiver wire adds earlier this week:
Storm Johnson (now the starter?!), C.J. Anderson (deeper leagues), Odell Beckham Jr.
