Week 4 Quarterbacks - Rankings & Matchups Analysis

Cam Newton is up against one of the softest pass defenses in the league in Atlanta. Against Minnesota last week, Newton was very inaccurate throwing three interceptions. In each season after his rookie year, he has had one game where he throws three picks. He got this game out of the way pretty early in 2016. Last year Newton had similar home/road splits, so expect no drop off with him being on the road in Atlanta. Newton is capable of a huge game in Week 4. He is more than deserving of his number one spot in the rankings.

Drew Brees and Philip Rivers face off for the first time in San Diego since the Chargers let go of Brees in favor of Rivers. Brees is extra motivated for this one, expressing that this game means “a little more” to him. Brees has dominated the Chargers in two games at home against his former team, but this will be his first trip to San Diego, and has been worse on the road in his career. Last season Brees held a 23:5 TD:INT ratio at home, and a 9:6 ratio on the road. Rivers has mixed results this season with the absence of Danny Woodhead and Keenan Allen. In Week 2 Rivers threw for only 220 yards, but netted four passing TDs. Last week Rivers threw for 326 yards, but did not get any TDs. Even against a weak Saints defense, Rivers is not a slam dunk play.

The Jaguars host the Colts in London this week, pitting two young QBs against one another. Andrew Luck is coming off only an OK game against a subpar Chargers secondary. Luck completed 24-of-37 passes for 331 yards, with a TD and an INT. The Jaguars have been equally bad against the pass, so there is a great opportunity for Luck to have a solid game. Blake Bortles and the Jaguars offense have taken a step back this season. Through three weeks, Bortles has averaged 281 yards per game with a 5:6 TD:INT ratio. The only weak pass defense he has faced so far is the Chargers, and he threw for 329 yards with two TDs and two INTs. Against a Colts defense that leaves much to be desired, this could be Bortles’ chance to have his first big game of the season with both teams slinging it through the air.

If you’re looking for a replacement for Russell Wilson or Eli Manning this week, Trevor Siemian can be a viable option against the Buccaneers. Siemian has seen his passing yards increase each week, topping out at 312 last week against the tough Bengals defense. He also threw for four TDs, and faces a much softer passing defense this week. The Buccaneers have allowed the sixth most fantasy points to QBs so far this season, meaning Siemian has a good chance to outperform his number 14 ranking on our list this week.

Jimmy Garoppolo has been named the starting QB for the Patriots on Sunday against the Bills. During the first two weeks of the season, Garoppolo averaged 248 yards passing with two TDs. The Bills defense looked much better in Week 3 against the Cardinals, picking off Carson Palmer four times while recovering a botched snap for a TD. Bill Belichick will prepare an excellent gameplan for Garoppolo to succeed in this start, just like he did for Jacoby Brissett last week against the Texans. Garoppolo is a great option for those in deeper leagues.
