Week 20 Corner Infield Waiver Wire Targets
Logan Forsythe, 1B/2B, Tampa Bay Rays (50 percent owned)
After scuffling in July, Forsythe has hit .353/.433/.627 in August, with four home runs and 14 runs scored in 13 games. He’s recorded multiple hits in six of those contests. On the year, the Rays’ leadoff man is batting .280/.343/.470 with 14 homers and six stolen bases. His numbers would look more impressive if he hadn’t missed most of May with a hairline fracture in his shoulder; prorating his current stats to a full slate would give him 25 homers and 104 runs.
Chris Carter, 1B, Milwaukee Brewers (44 percent)
It’s been business as usual for Carter this season, as he’s socked 27 dingers but also struck out 150 times on his way to a .220 batting average. He has a decent chance at setting new career highs in homers, RBI, and runs scored. All of Carter’s previous high water marks came in 2014, when he hit 37 bombs, driving in 88 runs and scoring 68 himself.
Mitch Moreland, 1B, Texas Rangers (37 percent)
With Prince Fielder’s career coming to an untimely end, Moreland suddenly finds himself back in the saddle as the Rangers’ starting first baseman. He’s acquitted himself well over the last month, hitting .329 with nine homers. Moreland still sits out most games against southpaws, though he’s actually hit them slightly better than righties this year. Even so, he’s on pace to shatter his previous career high in homers.
Cesar Hernandez, 2B/3B/SS, Philadelphia Phillies (23 percent)
Hernandez didn’t run much in the first half, and wasn’t particularly efficient when he did; he was just 6-for-11 on stolen base attempts. Since the break, though, he’s swiped seven bags in 10 tries. He’s continued to hit for average, but another notable improvement in the second half has been his plate discipline. He’s already walked more times in the last month (20) than he did in the season’s first three months (17), which has helped his runs scored total. He’s a solid three-cat contributor as long as that continues.
Cheslor Cuthbert, 3B, Kansas City Royals (8 percent)
The Royals’ quest for a repeat and a third straight AL pennant is all but dead in the water, but it’s not because of Cuthbert. He’s filled in quite well for the injured Mike Moustakas at the hot corner, hitting .295/.330/.451 with 10 homers. Since moving up to the two-hole last month, Cuthbert’s been even better: .310/.358/.460 with improved walk and strikeout rates. The 23 year old doesn’t run, but he’s an excellent choice if you need a batting average boost.
