Week 17 Waiver Wire: First Base (1B) and Third Base (3B)

Did you miss me? After a two week hiatus due to the All Star break and vacation, this feature returns to its regularly scheduled programming. Let’s make up for lost time and keep the preamble short. This week’s installment features four players who are freely available in over 75 percent of leagues.

Remember, in addition to this and other columns spotlighting players on the waiver wire, RotoBaller also compiles weekly waiver wire rankings. They're a great reference tool to aid your second-half push.

Editor's Note: RotoBaller offers the best Premium MLB Subscription - only $1.99 per week. All the tools you need to help win your seasonal and daily leagues: Hitter & Pitcher Streamers, Matchup Ratings for every player, Under-the-Radar Surgers for AVG, HR, Ks, plus daily DFS Cheat Sheets, Lineup Picks, Expert Lineups, Stacks and Avoids.

Week 17 Corner Infield Waiver Wire Targets

Yangervis Solarte, 1B/2B/3B, San Diego Padres (40 percent owned)

Fun fact: Over the past calendar year, Solarte has a higher wRC+ than Manny Machado. Naturally, his counting stats are much less impressive and he’s done it in 200 fewer plate appearances, but still. For a guy many fans couldn’t pick out of a lineup to be outproducing one of the game’s elite in any way is pretty incredible. Solarte is batting a robust .294/.361/.509 on the year with 10 homers, six of which have come this month. During July, Solarte has failed to record a hit in just two games.

Ryan Schimpf, 2B/3B, San Diego Padres (22 percent)

Schimpf’s nine home runs over the last month are the most in MLB (tied with Mark Trumbo, who last weekend became the first player to reach the 30 homer plateau in 2016). The 28 year old had always shown impressive pop in the minors, and that’s translating well in his first taste of big-league action. He’s batting only .239, but a healthy walk rate has him sitting on a .355 OBP. Long term, he would still seem to profile as a utility guy more than a starter. For the moment, though, he’s producing, and he’s eligible at both second and third base.

Lonnie Chisenhall, 3B/OF, Cleveland Indians (18 percent)

Chisenhall hasn’t developed into the star the Tribe hoped they were getting when he was drafted in the first round of the 2008 amateur draft, but he’s been a solid contributor to their best team since that time. He’s hitting .363/.373/.600 with four homers and a pair of steals in the last 30 days. Overall, he’s at .303/.349/.471, thanks in large part to career bests in contact, line drive, and strikeout rates. Chisenhall is still being shielded from southpaws, which limits his ultimate value, but he’s still a fine CI option in plenty of formats.

Cheslor Cuthbert, 3B, Kansas City Royals (11 percent)

Cuthbert has acquitted himself rather well during his rookie year. He’s currently hitting .296/.329/.461 with nine homers and 61 R+RBI despite hitting primarily in the bottom third of the order. He was recently bumped up to the two-hole and has flourished there, collecting multiple hits in four of seven contests. The defending champions are long shots to make the playoffs at this point, but Cuthbert has filled in admirably for Mike Moustakas and looks like a viable MLB starter.

Wilmer Flores, 1B/2B/3B/SS, New York Mets (7 percent)

Flores doesn’t play every day, but he’s eligible at every infield position save catcher and provides plenty of pop when he does see the field. Despite logging only 45 at-bats in July, the 24 year old Swiss Army knife has hit seven bombs. That production has helped the Mets remain in the driver’s seat for one of the NL wild-card spots and kept them within striking distance of the Nationals in the East. Flores’ limited playing time makes him a high-maintenance asset and a player who’s tough to roster in shallower leagues, but that’s par for course in single-digit ownership rate territory.

More Options: Logan Forsythe (45%), Travis Shaw (45%), Javier Baez (39%), Steve Pearce (32%), Cesar Hernandez (12%)
