Week 10 saw one big hit in Kirk Cousins and two misses with the rookie QBs. Jameis Winston did manage to get a late rushing touchdown. It saved his day from being awful, but it was still disappointing as far as my standards for this column.
I gambled on Marcus Mariota, knowing I didn’t like most of the matchups last week, and it didn’t pay off. The Panthers defense played up to their normal level. It turns out Jay Cutler was the mid-tier QB that went off in Week 10.
In Week 11, Tony Romo returns. He is already owned in most leagues, but if he is out there he is a must-add. We also get a few new names into the streaming mix. Matt Hasselbeck will be starting at the Falcons, and we might get Brock Osweiler at the Bears which is a pretty intriguing matchup. I’m still assuming Peyton is the starter, but Osweiler is definitely worth considering if he gets the nod.
QB Waiver Wire Pickups for Week 11
Alex Smith @ Chargers - 40% Owned
Yep, I’m hopping back on the Alex Smith train this week. Smith exceeded expectations against the Denver defense this week. Peyton Manning and Charcandrick West helped him out a lot -- but at the end of the day, he had solid points. He has now had at least 13 points in every matchup except his first with Denver.
The Chargers have allowed 16 pass touchdowns to five interceptions this season. You can feel fairly certain that Alex Smith and his three interceptions this season will make it through the game without making a mistake. In fact, Smith has now gone six straight games without an interception. Expect something in the range of 15-17 fantasy points this week.
Ryan Fitzpatrick @ Texans - 30% Owned
I was a bit scared off from Fitzpatrick’s thumb ligament issue, but he has continued to put up fantasy points in his past two games. Over the bye he had surgery to repair the ligaments, but he is expected to play against the Texans. It’s a good thing for fantasy owners because it’s a pretty good matchup. The Texans give up the 10th most points to QBs. That is despite Titans backup Zach Mettenberger scoring a lousy two points against them in Week 8.
Assuming Fitzpatrick plays and his hand is healed, he should be able to hit Brandon Marshall and Eric Decker all day. Expect something along the lines of 250 yards and two touchdowns for his fantasy output.
Mark Sanchez vs Bucs - 7% Owned
Am I really doing this? OH HECK YEAH.
It’s Sanchez time. He played pretty darn good last season after taking over for Nick Foles. On the other hand, much like the Eagles as a whole this season, he didn’t look anything like last year’s version when he came on the field against the Dolphins. He had no touchdowns and a killer interception on 23 throws.
Still, as far as deep league options go, there aren’t a whole lot. I’m willing to take a chance on Sanchez against the Bucs. Prior to facing Matt Cassel, the Bucs had given up multiple touchdown passes in five straight games. Sanchez threw for two touchdowns in six of his nine games last season. He’ll need to step it up from what he showed in relief against the Dolphins, but if he can it’ll be a good fantasy day.
