The year's first major championship is just around the corner, as the golf world is set to once again turn its eyes to Augusta National Golf Club for the 2023 Masters tournament on April 6.
The Masters is, famously, a tradition unlike any other, that is held in a special place of reverence by both golf fans and the world's most elite players. Make no mistake, winning a green jacket is life-changing and a dream of every golfer teeing it up in this year's edition of the tournament.
Winning the Masters gets you a spot in the field for a lifetime, but if you aren't a former champion, this is a very tough field to qualify for. Will Zalatoris has no such worries, as he earned his spot in the 2023 Masters thanks to his spot in the Official World Golf Ranking.

Viktor Hovland's Masters Odds
Below are Viktor Hovland's current odds for winning the 2023 Masters:
- DraftKings Sportsbook: +3500
- FanDuel Sportsbook: +3900
- BetMGM Sportsbook: +3300
Viktor Hovland's Recent Form
In 2023, Hovland has done what Hovland does, which is playing at an elite level from tee to green while piling up rock-solid finishes. Since closing 2022 with a win at the hit-and-giggle Hero World Challenge, the Norwegian has logged five top-20 results across his seven starts on the PGA Tour this year, including a sparkling T3 at THE PLAYERS Championship less than a month ago.
It's no surprise that the 25-year-old ranks near the top of the PGA Tour in ball striking, as he currently stands 15th in Strokes Gained: Tee To Green on Tour. Unfortunately, there's been little marked improvement in Hovland's famously-clunky short game. He currently ranks an abysmal 164th on Tour in Strokes Gained: Around The Green and his chipping has undoubtedly been an obstacle when it comes to closing out tournaments.
Viktor Hovland's Masters Record
Since earning low amateur honors with a T32 in his 2019 Masters debut, Hovland has consistently produced solid, if unspectacular results at Augusta National. This year's edition will mark his fourth career Masters start. He's never missed a cut at Augusta but also hasn't yet displayed much upside with a T21 two years ago standing as his best career finish in the year's first major championship.
While Hovland's elite ball striking is undoubtedly a major advantage for him at Augusta National, his short-game issues are undoubtedly a large hindrance on this unique layout that demands touch and creativity on-and-around the famously undulating and lightning-fast greens.
Viktor Hovland's 2023 Masters Outlook
Despite his world-class ball-striking ability, Hovland's Masters ceiling feels a bit capped by his infamous chipping woes. His previous results at Augusta National (T32-T21-T27) feel like a nice baseline for what to expect from the Norwegian in this year's edition.
In addition to the notable decline in his ball striking, Zalatoris' already-shaky putting stroke appears to have deteriorated even more over the last several weeks, which is not ideal as he heads to the lightning-fast greens of Augusta National. As public sentiment surrounding him seems to be at an all-time low, there's an interesting argument for "buying low" on the talented youngster.
