After underdoing successful surgery on Tuesday to repair the medial meniscus in his left knee, it was announced that Detroit Tigers designated hitter Victor Martinez will miss approximately 4-6 weeks. When that point comes, he can resume full activity and potentially be available at the very start of the regular season.
"We are very happy the surgery went well and that Victor will be ready to compete for the start of the 2015 season," said Tigers general manager Dave Dombrowski following the procedure.
Detroit is coming off a season in which they were eliminated in the ALDS by the eventual American League Champion Baltimore Orioles. Even if they miss Martinez for a bit in the beginning of the year, this is still an offense that features a lot of ammo, and figures to get a boost with the addition of Yoenis Cespedes, who arrived from Boston via the Rick Porcello trade. With Miguel Cabrera, J.D. Martinez, and Ian Kinsler still in town, there is certainly no shortage of offensive talent with or without the 36-year-old switch-hitter.
Martinez will be entering his fifth year with the Tigers in 2015. Last season was the best performance of his 13-year career. He registered career-highs in batting average (.335), home runs (32), on-base percentage (.409), and slugging percentage (.565). He also topped the 100-RBI plateau for the fifth time.
