ANALYSIS: The trade deadline was certainly kind to Tyler Thornburg and all those who stand to gain from his success. This season the 27-year old reliever has a phenomenal line of 1.78 ERA, 0.88 WHIP, and 12 K/9. His 3.1 BB/9 is steady at its serviceable rate from last year and his 0.8 HR/9 in HR-friendly Miller Park is a vast improvement from his mark of 1.8 last season. In the first three months that he pitched he had a 2.76 ERA, 0.89 WHIP, and two saves. Since the start of July Thornburg has a 0.38 ERA and 0.83 WHIP in 24 IP. Now that Jeremy Jeffress and Will Smith take residence in Texas and San Francisco, he has also been able to pick up four saves in his last twelve outings. Thornburg is having a career year, and he is able to cash in on his new zone in the 9th inning. That adds a lot of value down the stretch for playoff teams needing saves.
