ANALYSIS: After putting together some positive starts on the strength of a newfound slider and following eight innings of shutout ball against the Mets, rookie Tyler Beede came crashing back to earth last Wednesday as the Chicago Cubs roughed him up for four runs in less than six innings. While Beede coughed up three home runs, he still struck out seven batters and only walking one, while throwing the new slider a season-high 28.6%.
Beede lines up for a two-start week but be wary, as this is not a week for the weak of heart. He first goes on the road to face the Phillies in the easier of the two matchups, as Philadelphia has struggled against right-handers this year, posting only a 92 wRC+ and .741 OPS against them since June 1.
Beede then goes on the road to face the Rockies at Coors, a matchup for which no warnings should be needed. But it is worth noting that the Rockies have only a - 3.6 pVal against sliders this year, so perhaps Beede can ride it to Rocky Mountain success.
