Ty Johnson (RB, NYJ) - Week 14 Waiver Wire Pickups

ANALYSIS: The Lions opted to kick October off by waiving RB Ty Johnson after playing him for just 5 snaps in Week 2. Johnson signed with the Jets later, playing his first snaps for New York all the way back in Week 6. Since then, and in five games from W6 to W12, Johnson had scored a very sour 14.4 PPR points. Yesterday, with Gore on the shelve, Johnson exploded for 19.7 PPR points against the Raiders and was this close to helping New York missing on QB Trevor Lawrence come next draft. Just imagine...

Johnson is probably not a very smart play going forward if 1) Frank Gore is back and 2) the Jets realize how they are better off losing rather than winning games this season. Assuming the Jets are not intelligent enough to think that well, and they still look to get in the W column once, they should keep Johnson on the field. That would make him a more than a great addition to deep-league rosters of needy GMs at either the RB3/FLEX slots in their lineups.

Johnson's 19.7 PPR points in W13 ranked him as the RB7 overall (pending MNF) and he reached those thanks to heavy usage on the rushing game: he carried the rock 22 times for 104 yards, scored a touchdown, and put the cherry on top catching both of his targets for an extra 13 receiving yards on the day.

While odds are Johnson is not a weekly 20-PPR-point scorer, it is also true that Gore has averaged 8+ fantasy points in games he's played more than 20 spans this year, so Johnson should at least be able to reach that mark on similar situations ROS. The Jets have a sweet matchup next week against the 21st-best defense against fantasy rushers, making Johnson a nice addition in deeper leagues and a "what-the-heck" worthy FLEX play.

If Gore is back and the Jets are locked into drafting Lawrence, though, Johnson might come back to his goose-egg ways.
