ANALYSIS: Oakland Athletics starting pitcher Trevor Cahill has been a waiver wire favorite all year despite the profit window being rather small (damn you, injuries!) and his latest effort against the Giants gives me hope for August and September. He held San Fran to one run on two hits and three walks over 5 ⅔ innings to lower his ERA to 2.95 on the season.
Not only that, but if we remove the starts right before he hit the DL and his first start back in action, then his ERA falls to a beautiful 2.17! Injuries have killed Cahill's season (58 innings pitched), but this is still a guy that has a 1.02 WHIP and has struck out 55 batters.
Considering that 2017 season spiraled in the second half (8.22 ERA in 23 innings with the Royals), a strong start against the Giants is a good sign for the second half of 2018. If he is able to stay healthy (a big if albeit), Cahill has the potential to be an SP3 for the remainder of the season, particularly considering how well the Athletics have been playing.
