Fantasy players with an early draft slot will likely draft a wide receiver with their first-round pick. Many of those fantasy players will then draft a running back with their late second-round selection.
Unfortunately, those fantasy players will miss out on the top tier of second-round running backs, including Jonathan Taylor and Jahmyr Gibbs. However, Travis Etienne Jr. and Derrick Henry are two excellent late second-round picks at the running back position.
While both players are appealing low-end RB1 options for fantasy players, which one should get drafted first? Let’s dive into their 2024 fantasy football outlooks.

Travis Etienne Jr. 2024 Fantasy Football Outlook
Etienne was the RB3 in 2023, averaging 14.9 half-point PPR fantasy points per game. He had 267 rushing attempts for 1,008 yards and 11 touchdowns. The superstar struggled over the final few weeks, averaging 3.7 or fewer yards per rushing attempt in four of his final five contests. While the Jacksonville Jaguars want to lighten his workload in 2024, Etienne should have a featured role again.

Derrick Henry 2024 Fantasy Football Outlook
Henry was the RB8 last year, averaging 13.7 half-point PPR fantasy points per game. The veteran had 280 rushing attempts for 1,167 yards and 12 touchdowns. While he averaged only 4.2 yards per rushing attempt in 2023, Henry should be better this season after signing with the Baltimore Ravens in free agency. Furthermore, the future Hall of Famer can play emergency quarterback if Lamar Jackson misses time.

Who Should I Draft?
Fantasy players should be happy drafting either running back as their low-end RB1 this year. However, Etienne should get drafted ahead of Henry. He is the younger running back and has less injury concern. Furthermore, Trevor Lawrence will have less of an impact on Etienne’s rushing upside than Jackson on Henry’s upside. While both running backs are in a featured workload, Etienne also provides more upside in the passing game than Henry.
