Analysis: With the season ending injury of David Wright and the struggles of young gun Michael Conforto, the Mets were in bad need of an offensive boost to stay in NL East contention. That boost came in the form of former top-25 prospect Travis d'Arnaud. D'Arnaud has steady improvements since he appeared in the big leagues; in 2014 he hit 13 HR and produced a .718 OPS in 385 AB and in 2015 he hit 12 HR and produced a .825 OPS in just 239 AB. He has unfortunately been plagued by injury issues, but when he plays, he produces at the plate.
He has gotten off to a slow start this year with zero home runs and a .543 OPS in his first 65 AB. The good news is he is striking out at 18.3% which is the same rate from last year and is still producing a Hard Hit Ball rate of 28.8% according to Fangraphs. D'Arnaud is a fantastic offensive catcher in a season when catcher is a very shallow position. He is recovering from his DL return slowly, but his ceiling is worth the wait.
