Even when Torrey Smith was with the Baltimore Ravens he was a boom or bust wide receiver. He has never had the best hands, but he's always been a threat to score from anywhere on the field - especially when his quarterback can throw the deep ball. But through four games, the now San Francisco 49ers receiver has only nine catches for 185 yards and a touchdown.
That's alarming for Smith, who was given a $40 million contract this offseason to be Colin Kaepernick's go-to guy in the passing game.
In addition to not living up to expectations, the 49ers have seemingly grown tired of his inconsistency. He has only been on the field for 65 percent of the 49ers offensive snaps through the first four games of the season.
After dropping their third straight game on Sunday, head coach Jim Tomsula admitted "We need to use him more and we need to get him more involved."
Whether Tomsula will actually make an attempt to use Smith more or not remains to be seen, but those comments do make me hesitate advising the dropping of Smith in all redraft leagues. Without these comments after the team's loss to the Packers, I was ready to advise all owners to cut the cord on Smith. Now, I'd recommend holding onto him for at least one more week to see if he sees an increase in playing time or targets against the New York Giants in week 5.
But if you want to drop him anyways, I can't say I'd blame you. He is a very frustrating player to have on a fantasy football roster.
