Analysis: In 29.2 roller-coaster innings pitched for the horrid Cincinnati Reds bullpen this season, Tony Cingrani has once again gotten his ERA below 4, as it currently sits at 3.94. Cingrani also has a 1.35 WHIP and a 4.67 FIP made up of a 0.9 HR/9, a routinely poor 5.2 BB/9, and 7.6 K/9. Before this year, Cingrani had K/9 figures of 16.2, 10.3, 8.7, and 10.5, so the reduced amount of whiffs is a bit of a shock. Fortunately, Cingrani has also lowered the amount of hits and walks he allows from last season, going from 8.4 Hits/9 to 7.0 Hits/9, and from 6.8 BB/9 to his current figure of 5.2 BB/9.
Cingrani's troubles have been slowly subsiding. In April, he pitched 9.2 innings, produced a 3.72 ERA, and 1.55 WHIP; he struggled badly in May with 12.2 IP, a 4.97 ERA, and a 1.50 WHIP, and this month Cingrani has tossed 7.1 innings, with a 2.45 ERA, and 0.818 WHIP. Cingrani also has drastically different home/road splits. He is currently producing a 2.89 ERA, 1.18 WHIP, with 6.3 K/9 in 18.2 innings at home; while holding a poor 5.73 ERA, and 1.64 WHIP, with a characteristic 9.8 K/9 in 11 IP on the road. Maybe Cingrani pitches better when he isn't seeking high strikeout volume? Either way, Cingrani is improving and he remains in high leverage relief situations for the Reds.
