NHL DFS Analysis and Picks for 5/23/23
The National Hockey League playoffs have yet to disappoint this season -- depending on who your team is -- as it flaunts its competitive parity with multiple upsets in the first round, notably Presidents’ Trophy winner Boston Bruins and reigning champions Colorado Avalanche.
During the playoffs, it is much more common to find low-scoring and heavy-hitting games. Keep in mind that teams who showcase a high aptitude to score goals will play much tighter and be a bit pickier with their shots. I will do my best to guide you through this showdown slate on DraftKings and FanDuel starting at 8:00 p.m. EST.

Dallas Stars 0 vs Vegas Golden Knights 2
NHL DFS Core Plays- Showdown Edition For 5/23/2023
Captain
Roope Hintz - DK $15.9K || FD $14.5K
Hintz seems to be one of the only sources of consistency and offense right now for Dallas. In two games, the center has 1 goal, 2 assists, 6 shots and 3 blocked shots. Vegas has done a tremendous job shutting down the rest of Dallas, but they can’t quite crack their top line of Robertson-Hintz-Pavelski. In a massive Game 3 and the first of the Western Conference Finals to be played in Dallas, it is a much-needed win for the Stars and it would be unsurprising to see Hintz at the center of their success.
Wyatt Johnston - DK $9.9K || FD $9.5K
Typically sitting in the value section, Johnston needs to be considered for the captain spot as well. The rookie is the heart of Dallas right now playing for survival and in two games against the Golden Knights, he has 10 shots and 2 blocked shots. In the entirety of playoffs – 15 – games, he has 4 goals, 2 assists, 44 shots and 12 blocked shots. Vegas’s third line which Robertson should see plenty of, is their weakest defensive line, providing him plenty of opportunity to produce in a dire Game 3 at home.
Jonathan Marchessault - DK $12.6K || FD $13.5K
Marchessault is flying right now with 4 goals, 4 assists, 22 shots and 3 blocked shots over his last five games and he is the main reason why the top line of Vegas is thriving currently. After barely producing in the First Round against Winnipeg, the winger has taken the playoffs by storm since with 6 goals, 4 assists, 39 shots and 3 blocked shots in 8 games. Marchessault should be considered whether you run a Vegas stack or a one-off.
Value Plays
Ryan Suter - DK $3.6K || FD $7K
The blueline for Dallas has been all over the place these playoffs with little to no consistency. However, Suter is at least producing peripherals the majority of the games. In two games against the Golden Knights, he has 2 assists, 3 shots and 6 blocked shots and through 15 games in the postseason, he has, 5 assists, 17 shots and 26 blocked shots. He is a few blocked shots shy of the bonus on DraftKings – 3 or more blocked shots –. Dallas will be playing with an ounce or two of desperation as they have their backs up against the wall and this should set the ideal narrative for Suter to continue to rack up blocked shots.
Tyler Seguin - DK $7.4K || FD $8.5K
Seguin is more of a long-shot play that could pay massive dividends. The winger thrived while teammate Joe Pavelski was out after getting injured in Game 1 of the First Round. In nine games on the top line, Seguin had 5 goals, 3 assists, 28 shots and 2 blocked shots. All of this coming off a mediocre regular season at best. With Dallas struggling to keep up with Vegas in Games 1 and 2, it would not be surprising if there is a line shakeup coming into Game 3 that would place Seguin back on the top line.
Chandler Stephenson - DK $5.6K || FD 9.5K
Stephenson once again jumps off the page with a solid line 2 matchup against the Dallas Stars. In his two games against Dallas, he has 1 goal, 2 assists, 3 shots and 1 blocked shot. His peripherals will never be there, but his point production will. Stephenson is a big pass-first player as most centers are and his chemistry with wingers Brett Howden and Mark Stone is building each and every game. The line of Marchment-Domi-Seguin is the worst defensive line for Dallas with a 46.3 Percent Expected Goals Percentage. All the signs point to Stephenson and company playing a big role in the remainder of this series.
